Great editorial in the Taos News on our Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and how it is boosting the local economy. It shows that protected public lands are good for business. (March 12, 2016)
Despite what town of Taos officials say, since 2013 the Taos economy is improving at a rate that no one anticipated after the recession of 2008. Tourism is one of the main drivers of economic growth and can be measured by percentage increases of the Lodgers Tax:
- 11.3 percent in 2014
- 2.6 percent in 2015
- 6.3 percent in the first four months of fiscal 2016
- From 2013 – 2015, the five winter months were up 11.7 percent.
- From 2013 – fiscal 2016, the four summer months were up 23.3 percent.
